Opera dei Pupi is a traditional Sicilian puppet theatre. The wooden, painted puppets once used to be created in Palermo and Catania. As for Sicilian marionettes, the puppets are very big – some are 130 cm tall! The knowledge of puppet making and animating was passed on from generation to generation. In beautiful painted theatres, you can still see shows about knights (Charlemagne, Roland, Orlando), beautiful ladies (Aldobella and Olympia), Saracens and Arabian princesses, dragons, wizards, mermaids, and centaurs. We will attempt to make puppets based on the Sicilian marionettes (knights, princesses, and dragons) and we will give them Italian names. We will then play with them in our little cardboard theatre. The Sicilian marionette theatre, or Opera dei Pupi, is inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
