Born in 1956, a history professor, he concentrates on the recent history of Poland. In the 1980s, he was an editor in Tygodnik Solidarność and a member of the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia. One of the leading experts on the Second Polish Republic and the Polish People’s Republic, the political life of Polish emigration, and the history of political dissent in Poland after 1944. He has written numerous books: O kształt niepodległej (1989), Opozycja polityczna w PRL 1945-1990 (1994), Oaza na Kopernika. Klub Inteligencji Katolickiej 1956-1989 (1997), Życie polityczne emigracji (1999), Polska. Losy państwa i narodu 1939-1989 (2003), Przystosowanie i opór. Studia z dziejów PRL (2007), Anatomia buntu. Kuroń, Modzelewski i Komandosi (2007), Czas KOR-u. Jacek Kuroń a geneza Solidarności (2011), and Rewolucja Solidarności 1980–1981 (2014). In 1999-2006, he was a member of the advisory board at the Institute of National Remembrance. A scholar at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he also has lectures at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw. The winner of many prestigious awards including the Polityka award (2011) and the Kazimierz Moczarski Award (2011) for his book Anatomia buntu.
