A poet, a writer, and a journalist, he started publishing samizdat texts in 1977. After the introduction of martial law in Poland in 1981, he was the editor-in-chief of the underground literary journal Wezwanie, as well as writing books for independent publishing houses. From 1986, he wrote for (the Paris-based) Kultura (Dziennik zewnętrzny and Z ukosa series). From 1990 to 1994, he was the director of the Polish Institute in Stockholm and the cultural attaché in Sweden. Writing for Twój Styl, Res Publica, Architektura, Rzeczpospolita (Plus Minus), Newsweek, and Wprost, currently, he’s a columnist for Przegląd and Zwierciadło. He has written a few novels, numerous collections of poetry, and some short stories (including stories for children): Antoś i jeszcze ktoś, Osobisty przewodnik po depresji, Kolonia karna, Wyszedł z siebie nie wrócił, Splot słoneczny, Opiłki i okruszki, Naprzeciw siebie. In 2020, he published Dom pisarzy w czasach zarazy.
